The case against Edinburgh nightlife

Edinburgh Nightlife and a student Are like a long-married couple—inseparable, overly familiar and fed up of each other

As a fourth year I can say I have had plenty of nights out under my belt here at uni. The good, the bad, the memorable and the (slightly) unmemorable… I feel confident in my opinion on the night-life here. For the first two years, Edinburgh offers a great variety of places to suit everyone. The scene is fresh, exciting and every night out turns into something different. However, by the time honours years roll about one is all too familiar with every nook and cranny of Cowgate. You’ve been there and you’ve done that- and it isn’t necessarily thrilling enough to draw you back.

Despite being a small city, Edinburgh has a great variety of club nights. From drum and bass nights at Bongos to cheesy sing-a-longs at Subway Tuesdays, there’s something for everyone. The quality of clubs can be questionable, and bouncers unfair, but it is the perfect city to explore what floats your boat on a night out and what doesn’t. One swiftly learns that Big Cheese is one to avoid and that if you end up at Hive- it’s time to go home. This phase is like the honey moon stage of a relationship. You are still getting to know the other person, the rose-tinted glasses are still on and the red flags are looking all too green.

The frontal lobe of the Edinburgh student has a pivotal moment entering third year. Nights out no longer sound appealing, a cheeky sports night Wednesday seems more like a chore than a thrill. You start to recognise the soundtracks of many clubs, and the freshers begin to annoy you. But on the occasion that you do go out- for a friends birthday or what-not – you know you can depend on the nightlife and your accumulated friend group to have a phenomenal night out.

This is all too like an old married couple who know one another like the back of their hand, like knowing what song will next play at a Subway Tuesday, you know what your partner will next say in a conversation. But on memorable occasions- such as anniversaries and Christmas- they know the company and foundations built over the years will make it a very pleasant experience, and there’s no one they’d rather spend it with than their life partner. The same can be said of Edinburgh clubs and – with your university friends – there’s nowhere else you’d want chicken nachos from except Burrito and Shake at 4am.
