Missing Gorilla Discovered Sawn In Half In Layby

Large statue of a gorilla

A gorilla statue known as Gary the Gorilla has been found sawn in half in a layby near Dundee after going missing a year ago.

Gary, an eight-foot fibreglass gorilla, greeted visitors at the entrance to the Reynard Garden Centre in Carluke, Lanarkshire until he was stolen in March 2023.

The gorilla was sawn in half down the middle, leaving him faceless and without his chest.

He was found Thursday 21 March on the A92 over 60 miles from where he was last seen.

What remains of Gary has been returned to Reynard Garden Centre.

In a video message posted on Facebook, the garden centre launched the #BringALLofGaryHome campaign, saying:

“Gary is back!”

“We can confirm he’s not half the ape he used to be.”

“We have Gary’s back back, but we need you to have our back in helping get Gary’s front back.”

When Gary disappeared in 2023, police were unable to track his movements.

CCTV recorded a car carrying Gary in the general direction of Glasgow, before losing track of the vehicle.

Sightings of Gary from across the UK were reported to police over the past year, however, given that Gary’s ‘siblings’ are perfectly identical, no progress was made.

The discovery of Gary’s back half has reignited hopes that he will one day be fully returned to his home.
