About us
The Student was founded in 1887, making it Europe's oldest student newspaper. In 1992, the paper chose to become independent from the University of Edinburgh and its students' association (EUSA). The Student is highly regarded for its excellent journalistic quality, and the publication received the award for Best Publication from the Student Publication Association in 2024.
The Student publishes print editions fortnightly during term time, of which 750 free copies are distributed across 10 locations on the University of Edinburgh campus: Main Library, Library Cafe, Potterrow, Chrystal Macmillan Building, 40 George Square Cafe, Futures Institute Cafe, Pleasance Cafe, Law Library, the Edinburgh College of Art and Nucleus Cafe (Kings Buildings). Additionally, all articles are uploaded to the website weekly.
With a focus on student culture and Edinburgh life, the publication covers 11 sections: News, Opinion, Features, Lifestyle, Music, Art, Literature, Film & TV, Theatre, Sport and Science & Environment. Each August, The Student also has a press team who review hundreds of Fringe shows.
