Get Involved

We know joining a publication can feel daunting at first, but The Student is a very welcoming community that is keen to have more people involved throughout the academic year! If you are interested in joining the newspaper in any aspect please buy a membership on EUSA, then join our main WhatsApp group chat (QR code below) and sign up to our weekly newsletter as both of these are where we send most updates/information. Below are some of the different ways to get involved with the paper:

Writing:

Whether you've never written an article before or you're looking to expand your portfolio, we'd love to have you join our team of writers. Simply turn up to our writers' meetings at 5:15pm on Mondays in Quaker Studio, Pleasance and you can grab a pitch (or suggest your own!) from a sections' editors. You will then have until midnight on either Thursday or Friday (depending on if it's a print week) to write and submit your article. Each section will have articles of differing word counts and how often you write is entirely up to you so commitment is very flexible. We also have a writing guide to support new writers, which you can find when you join our WhatsApp group.

Editing:

This is a way to get more involved if you're a committed writer to The Student, having written at least six articles. The editor role encompasses creating pitch lists, editing articles, attending weekly editors' meetings and, on print weeks, making pages using Scribus. Editor positions usually open up at the start/end of semesters - we will announce openings at writers' meetings and on our Instagram.

Illustration:

To support both our print and online articles we are always looking for wonderful illustrations by our team of illustrators. Preferably we would ask that illustrations are done digitally but also accept photos of hand-drawn illustrations. Pitches for illustrations come out on Wednesdays at 8pm and are due on Saturday mornings. If you are interested, please join the WhatsApp group, linked in the main group chat's description.

Photography:

We also have a team of photographers to take images of Edinburgh sites for print and online articles. Like with illustrations, the photography pitches are released on Wednesdays at 8pm and then due on Saturday mornings. If you are interested, please join the photography WhatsApp group also linked in the main group's description.

Copyediting:

During our fortnightly print weeks, you have the opportunity to help with copyediting the print edition. This means using Scribus to go through pages and check for any grammatical and formatting errors to ensure there are no mistakes before we print. These sessions run every other week on Sundays from 10:30am, starting on Sunday 25th January 2026. Before attending, please come along to our copyediting training which we run at the start of every semester.

Distribution:

Fortnightly we are also looking for distributors to drop off copies of our print editions around campus on Wednesdays following print weeks. The copies are usually dropped off early in the morning in Pleasance so you simply pick up 50 and take them to your location. To put your name down join the distribution WhatsApp linked in the main group chat.
