Fringe 2024: Ginger Johnson Blows Off!

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

RuPaul’s Drag Race UK winner Ginger Johnson bursts onto the stage with energy and flair, making full use of a glitzy, bombastic set. From the start, it’s clear she’s here to dazzle us with a series of daredevil stunts, proving herself as an unstoppable force. Whether she’s blowing off with flaming farts, facing off against confetti cannons filled with drawing pins, or being launched across the stage as a human cannonball, Ginger Johnson Blows Off!  promises a wild ride. On paper, this show sounds like it could be a riot—a hilarious and thrilling alternative to a typical standup routine for a queen whose greatest talent has proven to lay in comedy. Unfortunately, the translation of these ideas onto the stage falls short.

The show’s intensity works against Ginger. The narrative is breathless, almost shouted over blaring music, which seemed to leave the audience more confused than entertained. At times, the pace is dizzying, moving at 100 miles per hour, while at others, it drags as we watch the same bits play out with dwindling anticipation. There’s a clear lack of suspense or tension—elements crucial to any death-defying stunts, even parodies. Instead, the confused tone makes it apparent that there’s nothing substantial to anticipate.

Too many weak points stagnate an otherwise visually exciting and promising production, which could have been much more enjoyable without the overpromise of excitement, even if Ginger’s stumbling dare devilling is clearly for camp affect. There are attempts at humour, but it’s often unclear where Johnson’s punchlines are, leaving her audience at odds about when to clap. This show is packed to the brim with jokes and double entendres; but if constant body fluid and fart jokes of any kind aren’t your thing, you might want to steer clear.

Coming off her  Drag Race UK win last year, I was eager to see Johnson bring her character to life on a stage of her own. Unfortunately, Blows Off! doesn’t quite hit the mark. While reality TV can often present an artificial version of its stars, expecting an artist to conform to that limited portrayal would be unfair. We should allow performers to evolve and grow. However, this production is not indicative of any post-Drag Race growth for Johnson, which is disappointing.

The show ends with Ginger singing, “What the fuck am I doing here?”—a question that, sadly, remains unanswered – sorry. With more self-awareness, better audience connection, and some adjustments to pacing, this show could easily have won me over. The show is far from unwatchable, just awkward. But in its current state, these missing pieces are too significant to overlook.

Ginger Johnson Blows Off! is on at 18:30 in Pleasance Courtyard’s Beyond until the 24 August (not 12, 19)
