Fringe 2024: Joe Thomas: Rule Breaker

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Joe Thomas (of Inbetweeners fame, but will also engage with Friday Night Dinners praise) is at the Edinburgh Fringe for one week only.

His new show, Joe Thomas: Rule Breaker, does not have much of a central theme; Thomas tells a fair few anecdotes, mostly about his relationship, parenthood, and how he is affected by embarrassment. Spoiler: it’s massively.

Thomas belongs to a large club of middle aged, self-effacing, slightly neurotic British male comics. His material is safe, which means it is funny, but it is not going to follow you home and make you laugh well after leaving the Cabaret Bar.

Thomas knows his audience; he balanced newer stories with the proper amount of Inbetweeners references to keep his crowd entertained and comfortable. He is chatty, funny, and at times, a bit rambling; there were definitely moments where Thomas’ nervous persona took over, it’s hard to find jokes funny when their teller isn’t sure himself.

This is a great show to take your parents to, if you’re looking for a safe-bet enjoyable afternoon.

Joe Thomas: Rule Breaker is on at 16:00 in Pleasance’s Cabaret Bar until 23 August.
