Back to Basics: How to Prepare for Backpacking This Summer

Backpacking has always appealed to students craving a sense of adventure, keen to explore new cultures, or simply looking for a way to escape three solid months back home. Summer 2025 is no different. Whether a backpacking newbie or seasoned professional, The Student’s here to share our best tricks and tips!

Destinations

For those with plenty of time, the iconic destinations of South-East Asia and Latin America can do no wrong – treating visitors to wonders from jungle-encroached citadels to secretive ultramarine bays, to enchanting wildlife. Closer to home, Europe offers a diverse variety of experiences, a classic being inter-railing, but I know some of you may have “been there, done that”. So, why not branch further afield? Explore the peaceful fjords and remote lakes of Scandinavia, or venture to the increasingly “Instagrammable” Balkan nations.

Transport

If looking to fly to your chosen destination, comparison sites such as Skyscanner are essential to compare dates and airlines, ensuring you get the best deal possible. Still undecided on your route? Why not take advantage of the “everywhere” destination option for a sense of spontaneity, while saving pennies. It is also cheaper to book as soon as possible, and choosing dates before school holidays can only benefit your budget. On the ground, public transport is your best friend: for ease with trains look at Inter-rail passes, or give your wallet a rest with FlixBus’s coaches, offering further discounts with UniDays.

Accommodation

While living out of only one backpack, in an alien country, it is essential your hostels provide comfort by matching your travel style: whether you love to party, rely on free excursions or want some time to yourself. The best starting point is “Hostelworld”, which showcases a range of hostels in a variety of locations, guaranteeing every traveller’s budget and needs are met. Personally, I recommend hostels where each week is jam packed with events and socials, allowing for stories from across the globe to be shared, friendships to be forged and laughs to be had. Additionally, amenities such as kitchens and laundry rooms are a must when attempting to retain a sense of decorum, without breaking the bank.

The Backpack Itself

When it comes to the backpack itself, there are so many questions and options to consider, that it can overwhelm even the most experienced of jet-setters. Hefty at any size, it’s key to not overdo it on backpack size – a 50L served me perfectly for a month around Europe. Though, I would suggest one with extendable space in the lid, such as Lowe Alpine’s, making it possible to fulfil all your souvenir desires. Inside the bag, listen to the hype about packing pods as they successfully squeeze everything in and, if effectively organised, make it easy to find what you’re looking for. Additionally, be brutally honest with yourself about what you’ll wear and remember outfit-repeating is acceptable (if you’re only staying a few days in each place, no one will know anyway!). Crucially, ensure all your favourite clothes are left at home because after weeks on the road, nothing is safe from the messy nature of backpacking.

Good luck to all those embarking on magnificent backpacking trips this summer, we look forward to seeing you on the other side (that’s if you choose to come home, of course).
