Scottish Small Presses Make Their Mark at 2025 Book Awards

Scotland’s vibrant independent publishing scene is once again in the spotlight, as five small presses have been named among the finalists for the 2025 Small Press of the Year Award at the British Book Awards. This recognition highlights the resilience, innovation, and literary excellence of these publishers, who continue to thrive despite the challenges of rising costs and an unpredictable economic climate.

Sponsored by CPI Books, the Small Press of the Year award honours independent publishers that push boundaries, champion diverse voices, and bring fresh perspectives to the literary world. This year, 46 small presses across the UK and Ireland have been shortlisted, with Scotland’s publishing talent well-represented among the finalists.

The five Scottish publishers in contention for the award reflect the breadth and depth of independent publishing in the country:

The Wee Book Company (Glasgow) Known for its dedication to Scottish history and storytelling, The Wee Book Company produces beautifully crafted books that celebrate Scotland’s heritage and culture.

404 Ink (Edinburgh) A bold, trailblazing press, 404 Ink has made waves with its commitment to publishing fresh, unconventional, and often radical voices, earning a reputation for shaking up the industry.

Rymour Books (Perth) A press with a strong emphasis on Scottish identity, Rymour Books is passionate about publishing poetry, folklore, and literary fiction that connects with the country’s rich storytelling traditions.

Scotland Street Press (Edinburgh) Dedicated to bringing underrepresented stories to light, Scotland Street Press publishes thought-provoking fiction, memoirs, and translations, making literature more accessible and inclusive.

Charco Press (Edinburgh) Renowned for its focus on contemporary Latin American literature in translation, Charco Press has brought some of the most exciting international voices to English-speaking audiences, bridging cultural and literary gaps.

Out as the Scottish winner, 404 Ink will now move forward to compete against the other regional and national winners. The overall winner of the Small Press of the Year award will be announced at The British Book Awards ceremony at Grosvenor House, London, on Monday 12 May 2025. Regardless of the outcome, Scotland’s finalists have already demonstrated the power and importance of independent publishing in championing diverse narratives and keeping literature fresh, dynamic, and engaging. For readers and writers alike, these small presses offer a gateway to unique and compelling stories that might otherwise go unheard. Their recognition at The British Book Awards is a testament to their invaluable contribution to the literary landscape.
