The claims of American liberal ideologues, like Hillary Clinton, about support for universal human rights and a “rules-based” international world order have always come into conflict with their track record on the international stage, but their unflinching support for the genocide in Gaza has been the final nail in the coffin.
Once you have supported a genocide, anything is permissible, as Dylan Saba, writer and attorney at Palestine Legal, said when interviewed in Dazed about the Palestine movement, “the ask is simply: ‘don’t commit the crime which society has agreed is the worst crime possible’ […] the ruling class said, ‘that’s nice. Go fuck yourself.’” What is there to save of liberalism, an ideology centred around individual human rights, if they have decided that the worst crime possible is acceptable in order to protect the prosperity and rights of Americans against Donald Trump?
What this also means is that since a genocide is an acceptable cost to pay for stopping Trump, so is everything else, so even the domestic aspects of liberalism are stripped off like ballasts on a hot air balloon. This was clear when Kamala Harris adopted a tough on immigration stance in an attempt to outflank Trump’s stance on immigration, rather than trying to provide a pro-immigration alternative narrative.
What we see is the Democratic party calling to vote “blue no matter who” (as long as they are a neoliberal) to avoid the Republican party, which ironically, they are constantly trying to mimic by lurching rightwards, seeing that as the only means of coming into power.
The problem with the argument that Democrats should have been allowed to support the Gaza Genocide unopposed because the 2024 election was such an important election is that it serves as a precedent to ignore all moral norms in the name of victory. The Republican party is now the party of Trump, meaning that the next Republican nominee will either be Donald Trump or a Trumpian, and as a result the next election will also be “too important” to allow things such as destructive and unsustainable neoliberal economic policies or a genocidal warmongering foreign policy to stand in the way of your vote for the geriatric Democratic party.
Gaza has revealed once and for all the moral rot that exists in Western liberalism. Theoretical beliefs like “liberté, égalité, fraternité” are thrown to the wayside for the sake of the personal comfort of Westerners at the cost of the immiseration and murder of the masses of the Global South.
