Why is everyone (well, most people: 54.8% to be exact) buying SUVs? You can’t all be offroading at the weekend. You can’t at all, in fact. Nearly all modern SUVs aren’t off-roaders, and nearly two thirds aren’t even four wheel drive.
The only reason to buy an SUV is you like the body style, and the body style sucks. They’re heavier, which means they’re harder on roads and produce more pollution; they’re bigger and taller, which makes them more dangerous in cities and less manoeuvrable in the country; they’re more expensive, because they’re bigger, and they’re just ugly. While I can’t back this one up rigorously, I dare you to say with a straight face that the new Defender is a good-looking car.
But everyone in the world seems to see it differently from me. Normally I’d accept this, if it weren’t for the fact that they’re making my life – and yours – actively worse. The extra fuel they need means more climate change; the bigger size means that cities have to be built with bigger roads, which makes them less walkable. Most importantly, they keep driving at 30mph in front of me when I need to get to work.
