19 Edinburgh parks have been given protected status

19 new parks in Edinburgh have recently been given protected status by the Council and the charity Fields in Trust.

The protection measures aim to preserve green spaces for Edinburgh residents, and to conserve biodiversity.

This takes the number of protected parks in the city to 55, with the total protected area exceeding 500 hectares.

Over two-thirds of Edinburgh residents now live within a ten-minute walk of a protected park.

Councillor Val Walker said: “Through our partnership with Fields in Trust we’re ensuring that a high proportion of our residents are within a ten-minute walk of a protected green space.

“These spaces are essential for mental health, wellbeing, leisure, and community building and remain a key priority for us as part of our response to the climate and nature emergencies.”

With Edinburgh’s population set to increase by 10 per cent over the next 20 years, its green spaces are becoming more and more important.
