Short Rant: Vote, Vote, Vote

2024 is the year of elections – and you’re not done hearing about it from me yet.

Over the past few weeks, the opinion section has unashamedly published many an article focused on elections, both locally, with the EUSA election and council by-election in Glasgow, as well as nationally, and internationally too. Infuriated by the lack of interest shown by friends and peers, I’m desperate to make the point that politics matters.

At some point in the decline of our society, probably coinciding with politic’s loss of dignity, it became a badge of honour to not care about politics. Being able to brush off current affairs, and look inwardly, focusing only on ourselves and our immediate circles, became normalised and lauded.

We’ve been screwed over by politicians who don’t care, parties who out their friends first. If you don’t vote, you don’t have the right to complain. You have the power to do something about it, don’t ignore that just because you can’t be bothered to sign-up.

So register to vote. Get interested. Care about something bigger than just yourself.

Through out history, people fought for this right, given up their lives for it. You’ve got an opportunity many have dreamed of, so don’t waste it.
