BREAKING: Severe weather warning, all teaching and campus events cancelled

The University of Edinburgh will be closed with no in-person or online teaching on Friday 24 January, due to extreme weather conditions.

In a statement, the University said: “We will seek to make sure that this missed teaching is recovered through the remainder of the Semester.

The Main Library will be closed from midnight on 23 January and is expected to reopen on Saturday 25 January, depending on the weather conditions…”

It continued: “Any events planned to take place on campus on 24 January will also be cancelled.”

Winds are expected to reach upwards of 80mph, according to the Met Office – which issued a red weather warning.

This means there will very likely be a risk to life and the possibility of widespread damage to property and infrastructure.

In the event of a red weather warning, the Met Office advises people to “avoid travelling, where possible, and follow the advice of the emergency services and local authorities.”

The government has issued an alert on people’s phones.

The University also stated that student support services like the Resident Life team would still be operating.
