A Student’s Guide to Surviving (and Thriving at) Edinburgh’s Wildest Festival

Edinburgh fringe festival

Until recently, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival was just something I’d heard about in passing – a chaotic, colourful mass of theatre, music, comedy, and street performances taking over the city each August. I’d never been before. But this year? I’m staying in Edinburgh for it. And if, like me, you’re diving in for the first time, I’ve pulled together a few tips and tricks to help you make the most of what’s arguably the biggest and most bonkers cultural event in the world.

The Fringe is the world’s largest arts festival, and it returns this year from 01–25 August 2025. Think hundreds of shows crammed into 25 days – everything from West End-ready productions and comedy heavyweights to experimental performances. New shows are released in waves, so keep your calendar close:

  • First shows revealed: 12 March
  • Second batch: 02 April
  • Third batch: 07 May
  • Full programme launch: 03 June

Each announcement builds the hype, and helps with planning – because trust me, you’ll want to plan. The biggest shocker when you first look at the programme is just how many shows there are. It’s overwhelming.

My best advice? Start by filtering by genre. Whether you’re into theatre, comedy, spoken word, music, dance, musicals, or even circus acts, narrowing it down will save your sanity. If you’re feeling adventurous, set a goal: one show per genre, or one show a day.

One of the coolest things about the Fringe is that venues are everywhere. Yes, there are traditional theatres and concert halls, but you’ll also find performances in bars, cafés, back rooms, tents, parks, and even buses. Part of the fun is discovering the weird and wonderful places shows pop up in.

Don’t forget the Fringe street events, too – free, energetic performances that fill the city with colour, sound, and spontaneity.

Expect the unexpected (and know where to look). Download the official EdFringe app – it’s a lifesaver. With it, you can search for shows by title, performer, company, date, time or genre. You can use the Nearby Now feature to find performances that are about to start in venues close to you. Try the Shake to Search function if you’re still feeling indecisive – just shake your phone and get a random recommendation!

My goal is to simple embrace the chaos. There’s no one “right” way to do the Fringe, and it won’t be possible to see everything. Be open to surprises, say yes to random flyer-handing students, and don’t be afraid to walk into something completely bizarre.
