On January 21, Holly Humberstone dropped ‘To Love Somebody,’ the newest single from her upcoming sophomore album Cruel World. The singer-songwriter makes heartbreak seem beautiful in her upbeat but bittersweet new song. Known for her introspective and intimate lyrics and sound, Humberstone is an expert at making you want to sing along, dance, and maybe even shed a few tears, and ‘To Love Somebody’ is no exception.
Love is both at the centre of this track and her upcoming album, with Humberstone noting in an interview that “In order to feel extreme happiness, you have to know extreme sadness. That’s the tension of this record”. She sings in the catchy chorus of: ‘To Love Someone’, “To love somebody, to hurt somebody, to lose somebody, is to know you’re only human, honey…Well, at least you got to love somebody.” The song is about dealing with the contradiction of loving and losing someone, and looking for the positives while navigating brutal heartbreak.
The strength of ‘To Love Somebody’ cements how Humberstone’s sound and style has grown in confidence since she first came on to the scene in 2020 with her breakout hit Falling Asleep at the Wheel. If this single is any reflection of what is to come in her upcoming album, which will release on 10 April, then it surely will be a hit.
