THREE60’s World’s Evolution arrives in Edinburgh

THREE60 Dance Company: bold, brave and experimental. They will grace Edinburgh’s stages this week after their tour over the past month. They bring an exciting display of hiphop wonder, catchy beats and fast tempo triads.

With them is World’s Evolution, a powerful new piece which has picked up a highly commended award from Fringe Review and which hopes to energise its audience through a piece about time, and the human journey through it. At the production’s heart is Africa, especially given the company’s focus on African artists.

The audience are transported from century to century, place to place in this gripping piece of complex artistry. The performance serves to question belonging and origins, interrogating human past experiences and future ones also. This urgent work is all delivered through a vibrant piece which weaves these themes with choreography.

Co-director of the company and a key artistic contributor to World’s Evolution, Divine Tasinda, summed up the performance as ‘bringing together playful, multidisciplinary, creativity across the umbrella of street dance’. The piece strives to highlight black and African culture in Edinburgh and rural Scotland, where the production has been touring. Tasinda explains that the show ‘aims to spark curiosity, awaken creativity, and inspire everyone to see themselves within the story’. Connection is key to this piece and the company, and linking people of varying backgrounds into one story of evolution.

THREE60 is a large dance company prioritising community through their culture. Their name serves as an acronym for ‘The Housing Request of Entertainment Empire 60’. Thus, they strive to be a unique base for dance in Scotland.  Over 50 per cent of their dancers have turned their passion for dance into a livelihood. Their core aim is to decrease barriers which limit dancing in Scotland and opportunities for dancers. Through experimental choreography techniques, the team looks to contain and nurture talent in this Street Dance space.

Touring World’s Evolution, Three60 started their tour at Cumbernauld Theatre before arriving at St Andrews’ Byre Theatre on 23rd April.

World’s Evolution proves to be a slick, meaningful conversation between Scotland and African/hip-hop artists, providing an unmissable narrative about belonging and the future of these sentiments.

World’s Evolution by THREE60 is playing at Studio Theatre, Edinburgh this Friday 10th April at 7.30pm
