This production is one for the quiche loving lesbians. It is a show that will make you leave proud of who you are.
5 Lesbians Eating A Quiche is written by Andrew Hobgood and Evan Linder, and performed by Cheese Platter Productions. It is jam-packed with energy, yearning and a lot of egg. In 1950s America, five women host a group of widows to decide who has made the best quiche. This leads to secrets being unveiled — ultimately everyone comes out as lesbians.
This was an extremely immersive and high energy performance that was delightful to experience. From being given name tags by the characters as you enter and small amounts of participation throughout, it truly felt like I was attending the quiche competition.
Each performance was a joy to watch. While each character was portrayed full of life and vigour, I wished for more variety in performances. Some of the actors felt quite single-tone on occasion. Despite this, I was compelled by each character, wanting to get to know them all individually. A particular stand-out performance for me was by the character Lulie played by Jessa Blackthorne. She commanded the room with each line of dialogue, and was even fearsome to behold. I cannot express enough how much energy and passion each woman presented, making for a thrilling experience. While the set was simple and costumes apt, it is really the cast that will leave a smile across your face.
Although the play has been in production since 2012, it is as relevant and important as ever. There is a genuine buzz of exhilaration and joy throughout the room, as lesbian pride is expressed and experienced in its fullest form. The crowd was perfectly suited for the show and they really allowed themselves to become members of the quiche-eating club.
I implore everyone to go and see 5 Lesbians Eating A Quiche — you will leave with a sense of pride no matter who you are. It is camp, dramatic and hilarious. What more could you want? And even if you are just a big fan of eggs, you will love this performance.
