Holly Humberstone welcomes us back into her gothic fairytale world with the first single from her upcoming deluxe album, Cruel World… So It Ends. ‘Too Cute To Be Lonely’ is filled with the typical charm of the English singer-songwriter, who further developed her standout sound in her April album Cruel World. The single, which is set against the backdrop of an ’80s-inspired synth-pop instrumental, expands on the style and captivating world building of the original album.
The lyrics of the song paint the picture of an evening with an “almost romantic friend” and the singer’s desire for the night to continue, pointing out that “It seems a shame to say goodbye / When night skies are in short supply in London”. She urges her love interest not to “leave a girl upset in such a pretty dress”, which, despite a tinge of desperation, seems to be a playful attempt to get some attention. Ultimately, Humberstone is asking for confirmation of the reciprocation of her feelings in the relationship.
Combining Humberstone’s enchanting voice, which successfully conveys her desire and longing, with her imaginative songwriting and the result is a song which is easy to enjoy and listen to on repeat.
