This year the festival is expanding its ‘experience economy’ into skill-learning events and workshops. This Boro stitching workshop, organised by Sue at Sunshine Designs, creates an intimate environment of meditative and renewable practices.
You are provided with a complete kit to help you make your own pieces and get stuck right in within 10 minutes. Boro stitching is a traditional Japanese practice of mending with sewing and embroidering dyed blue fabrics (indigo is believed to have antiseptic properties). This technique is a must-have for anyone wanting to make their clothing or bedding last longer.
Far from just being a practical technique, as the pieces are repeatedly fixed and sewn, they become beautiful patchworks that, as you are helped to achieve in an hour and 45 minutes, can be stand-alone artworks.
Sue dispenses a wide range of knowledge across all textiles, provides many extra tools and decorations, and demonstrates how to present your work beautifully.
It is a highly meditative practice as well as being relatively inexpensive and beginner friendly. If you are looking for a calm getaway from the festival and are interested in learning something new, this is the event for you.
The Japanese Boro-Inspired Slow-Stitching Workshop is running August 8-11 at 13:00. Tickets available here: https://tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/japanese-boro-inspired-slow-stitching-workshop
