The iconic live-music venue on Chamber Street The Jazz Bar will close suddenly.
In an announcement published on their website last night, the owners said, “the cost of living crisis coupled with operational challenges proved too much” for The Jazz Bar.
This announcement comes two days after The Jazz Bar a temporary closure was announced due to the discovery of a leak within the venue.
“Today, as we announce the closure of The Jazz Bar Ltd, we do so with a profound sadness, but also with gratitude for the countless memories and friendships forged within its walls”, the announcement read.
The Jazz Bar was opened on 1 July 2005 by Edinburgh-based jazz organizer Bill Kyle. It replaced Kyle’s initial venue The Bridge Jazz Bar which was destroyed in the December 2002 Cowgate fire. Kyle passed away in 2016, leaving the Bar to be run by his daughter Edith.
Expanding its music repertoire over time, The Jazz Bar hosted performances of jazz, blues, rock, funk, soul, and electric music. The venue hosted several U.K. and U.S.-based jazz musicians since its foundation and won several awards for its cultivation of a jazz community in Edinburgh.
A popular location for music lovers and clubgoers, The Jazz Bar provided a unique nightlife experience that distinguished itself from other clubs around the city. The Edinburgh University Jazz Orchestra and the Edinburgh University Jazz Society frequently performed at the venue, attracting students to “the perfect Edinburgh speakeasy”.
In their closing announcement, the management extended their “sincerest thanks to the musicians, staff, and patrons who made The Jazz Bar a cherished part of Edinburgh’s cultural landscape.”
“We must also mention our gratitude to Bill Kyle, whose vision and passion brought The Jazz Bar to life, we extend our deepest appreciation,” the announcement said.
“The Jazz Bar is more than just a venue to many people; it was a cornerstone of a community and will be quite literally irreplaceable to the Edinburgh music scene and gig economy.”
