From Fashion Week to Your Wardrobe: Shoes to Make Yours this Season

Sure, stiletto heels are in for the “office girl” trend and plush footwear for the “cosy indoors” look are popular, but are we really going to wear them on unforgiving cobblestones and in unpredictable rain? As someone who values wearability above all, here are my top footwear picks that transition seamlessly from lecture halls to farmers’ markets, and even nights out.

  1. The Biker Boot

Every fall/winter season, black boots make their comeback, but in 2024 it’s all about the motor or biker-inspired style.

These boots, with their edgy buckle details and silver hardware, are getting various updates from designers. Miu Miu and Prada have added laces, buckles, and a worn-in patina for that tough, lived-in look, while Valentino and Hermès have gone for a more minimalist approach with pull-on designs, featuring little hardware and sleek, stacked heels.

If the runway styles feel out of reach, don’t worry—there are great everyday options available at Frye, Loewe, and Paris Texas. I would recommend Coconuts by Matisse Basil Booties (in cafe colour) and Steve Madden Brocks Boots for affordable choices.

  1. Statement-making Mary-Janes

The classic Mary Jane, known for its sweet and dainty look, has undergone a bold transformation this season. Designers have added thick straps, conical heels, glossy leather finishes, silver grommets, and bold studs to create statement-making shoes. Brands like Bally, Ganni, Valentino, Loewe, and Chloé have all created stunning styles, and my personal favourites include Campo Mary-Jane Mule by Loewe and Black Square Mary-Jane Ballerina Flats by Shushu/Tong. Both are perfect for everyday wear during fall, and with warm, stylish socks, you can even carry them into winter.

  1. Kitten Heels

For an event-ready yet foot-friendly option that works well in a rainy city like Edinburgh, look no further than kitten heels. These ladylike shoes, which graced the runways at Prada and Tory Burch, have found their way into mainstream fashion. Whether you’re styling a slinky sweater dress or a tailored suit, kitten heels in fall’s trendiest shades are the perfect balance between chic and practical.

Burgundy has long been the go-to winter code and it’s already taken over our bags, but oxblood is the standout colour for heels this season. Richer than cherry but not as earthy as brown, it will only make your style hotter.  Marc Fisher Allon Slingbacks offer an affordable option with a polished finish ideal for party nights, while Jimmy Choo’s Amita 45 Pumps, with their sophisticated pearl strap, are a luxury dream.

  1. Slim Sneakers

Last year saw the rise of sleek, retro sneakers like the Adidas Sambas, and their slim, sporty silhouette remains a strong trend for 2024. Fashion crowds are frequently seen in pairs from Adidas, Puma, and Nike, and as fall progresses, expect to see even more. While neutral tones are a safe choice, unexpected colours and patterns can make a simple outfit—like a white T-shirt and straight-leg jeans—pop with minimal effort.

In the end, the trends come and go, as they always do. I’d like to close this list of recommendations with a reminder that what’s most important is that you find what works for you and that you keep walking.
