Word on the Vine: Are Lidl wines worth the hype?

Lidl has some great wine bargains, but are they worth it?

1. Vega Del Cega – NO (£5 – before MUP)

This sweet Tempramillo (same grapes as most Riojas) was too mushy and flabby (no acidity) for my liking. Boring, bland, and teeth rottingly sweet. Made with Tempranillo grapes, it has the customary spicy notes. Even a pre drinks before Potterrow’s Big Cheese is too good for this trainwreck.

2. Riesling – 1000x YES (£5.50 – before MUP)

Stunning number for an incredible price. Fresh, aromatic and subtle notes of citrus and gooseberry. Unlike some budget Rieslings that can be so bone dry (not sweet) it hurts, this is well balanced: light with a refreshing acidity. A complexity better suited to a meal than just for pre drinks – this would be incredible with Thai food.

3. Capa Lebrel, Rioja – YES (£6.50)

Full bodied, mature and peppery. Slightly dry and sharp, but hearty and a great example of a Rioja (Spanish wine from the Rioja region – wine made here has to meet specific requirements). Hint of oak, as well as plums, spice and all things nice. This could stand up for itself at pre drinks, or would be great with a hearty dish (think big tomato, meaty dishes like a spag bol or steak if you’re feeling fancy).
