Tucked away on the southeast corner of The Meadows is a true Edinburgh gem. With its bright interior, tasty treats and amazing coffees, this place is the perfect retreat to chase away those winter blues as we head into the darker months.
As I stepped into the café, I was amazed by how the sun shone right through its wide windows and filled every corner of the room. The blue and white décor, a homage to its Greek origins, immediately reminded me of sunnier times spent lounging in the Mediterranean.
As a self-professed coffee fanatic, I do appreciate a simple and humble latte but done right, and this place achieves just that. The coffees my friend and I ordered, an oat milk latte (£4.1) and a flat white (£3.8), were both exceptional. With a strong espresso base, velvety milk and finished with a lovely piece of latte art, both were poured to perfection.
For those in need of an afternoon pick-me-up, the counter boasted a great selection of homemade sweet treats, from a mean looking Nutella brownie to an enticing Lemon pie. We went for the Cinnamon Tsoureki which although on the pricier side at £4.95, was the perfect pairing to our coffees, especially when dipped.
As the days get shorter and the light starts to fade, Lady and the Bear is a must go to soak up every bit of sun in a warm and inviting atmosphere. Personally, I like a café with a bright spacious interior where I can bury myself in a good book, and this place fulfils that criterion exactly. Perhaps I’ll pop back in after my next visit to the second-hand bookshop Tills just a couple doors down.
Those coming with laptops should be aware that the café is split into two sections: a work-zone and laptop-free area with the well thought out intention of preserving the ambience of each section. No need to worry about keyboard clatter around you when sipping on your coffee in the laptop-free zone.
If you are looking for somewhere to catch up with a friend, find new inspiration for your essays or simply a coffee that is bound to leave a smile on your face, Lady and the Bear is certainly a great option.
