Wear or Tear: Crocs

The humble Crocs, a timeless addition to humanity’s inventory of paraphernalia. They’re a divisive fashion choice, sworn to by some and scorned by others. Is it Crocs with socks, or must they be worn on their own? I have been fortunate enough to grace many a pair over the years and they have proved themselves flawlessly with their four-by-four capabilities and unquestionable aura. Anyway, let us move swiftly on before this fashion review digresses into the depths of my Crocs love affair.

Back in 2002, when Crocs were first let loose in the market, they were undoubtedly the pinnacle of footwear innovation. It was truly ‘one big step for humanity,’ at this point as not one soul had considered the possibility of a wholly injection-moulded shoe — madness! Yet the Croc was a circular moment: for all its technological prowess, it revisited an old classic, that is the clog. Clogs, or klompen as our Dutch friends refer to them, are traditional farming shoes that nowadays tend only to be sported by the local legends of Dutch village pubs, as I found out in the small but mighty Lochem at Café de Keijzer — a supreme spot!

So, the ultimate question: when and where is it socially acceptable to rock out with your Crocs out? I think the answer comes down to the model. Perhaps you’re a dignified Croc wearer who confines them to a domestic life, or perhaps you fashion them shamelessly in lectures!
