The Old Medical School was closed on Saturday 2 November for filming a new Apple TV show, The Buccaneers.
Set in London, The Buccaneers follows five women as debutantes of the 1870s.
The first series of the show released in 2023, receiving positive reviews and comparisons to Netflix’s successful Bridgerton series. Filming for The Buccaneers has taken place throughout Europe.
During the first season, Glasgow doubled as New York, and Glasgow University was used in several scenes. As the second season is in production, this marks the first time the show has used Edinburgh for filming.
Filming for The Buccaneers previously saw East Claremont Street and Broughton St. Mary’s Church closed for filming.
Edinburgh has been host to a variety of films and TV shows that have become minor hallmark’s of the city’s culture.
Trainspotting, the 1996 film starring Ewan McGregor, explored urban poverty in Scotland’s capital city. It remains a highly acclaimed film worldwide and locally for displaying the actualities of living in one of the worlds most picturesque cities.
The 2011 Netflix TV series One Day was a love story around two Edinburgh University students after they meet at a ball.
The Bucaneers second series is set to release in early 2025, though an exact release date is yet to be announced.
