An Evening with Carol Ann Duffy 14 November, Greenside Church
Join Carol Ann Duffy and John Sampson for an evening of poetry and music. Duffy was the first woman and the first Scottish-born poet to hold the position of Poet Laureate. She will be reading from her latest collections Earth Prayer and Three Wise Men as well as her earlier work. John Sampson is an Edinburgh based musician bringing a musical element to this night of award-winning poetry.
Book Week Scotland 18-24 November
The theme for this year’s annual celebration of books and reading is “hope”, with events happening across the country. In Edinburgh you’ll find panels exploring Scottish landscapes, history and joy in literature with authors like Linda Cracknell and Ely Percy. The Scottish Book Trust works to highlight the benefits of reading and writing across Scotland.
Radical Book Fair 21-24 November
Lighthouse Bookshop’s Radical Book Fair returns to the Assembly Roxy in late November. The theme this year is “From Where We Stand”, looking at different histories of protest and how we can draw on them today. There will be book stands to browse all weekend and various events with guests including Faridah Abike-Iyimide, Marianne Brooker and Jeremy Corbyn.
Push The Boat Out 22-24 November
Edinburgh’s poetry festival is back this November with events at four different locations – Pleasance, The Scottish Storytelling Centre, Dovecot Studios and Dance Base. There will be 50 events across the weekend with more than 120 artists showcasing poetry, music, performance, and art. There will be the open mic “Rock the Boat”, a “Makar-athon” with Hannah Lavery and Michael Pedersen, and much more – bringing poetry to audiences in new ways.
In Conversation with Eliza Clark 27 November, The Portobello Bookshop
Eliza Clark, author of bestsellers Boy Parts and Penance, will be in conversation with Edinburgh based journalist Anahit Behrooz talking about her new book She’s Always Hungry. Clark’s debut short story collection explores hunger and the desire to be sated. She’s Always Hungry has been labelled ‘unsettling, revelatory, and laced with her signature dark humour’.
