As students, it’s so easy to get stuck inside the library, moving outside only to go home, to lectures and the occasional social gathering. Not only does fresh air clear your head, but spending time outdoors also has real benefits for your physical and mental health. So, how can we build outdoor time into our routines and where are the best places in Edinburgh to enjoy it?
The Benefits of Getting Outside
Scotland is known for its long dark winters, and many people living here have a vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D is essential for bone health, immunity function and mood regulation. Even though it might not feel too sunny, getting outside, even for short periods, can help boost vitamin D levels whilst also improving your overall well-being.
Beyond the biological reasons, spending time outdoors has an instant effect in relieving stress and boosting energy levels, helping you to focus when you get back to work. It feels great to blow away the cobwebs, even better when you are spotting the first signs of spring – hearing birdsong, snowdrops popping through and even the sun making an occasional appearance!
How to Make Time for It
I find making time to get outside can be difficult, especially when deadlines seem to be never-ending. The best way I have found is to build it into your routine:
- Walk or cycle to uni. Even a short walk helps start or end your day on a good footing. You can go one step further by extending your walk slightly and going a different way than usual to switch it up!
- Take study breaks outdoors. Try and step outside for ten minutes and get some fresh air. George Square is a great spot for this and once it gets warmer, it’s an amazing lunch spot!
- Bribe yourself! Nothing makes a walk better than with your favourite hot drink.
- Make social plans outside. Whilst time alone is also important, you can also do this with your friends. Meeting up for a walk and a natter is the perfect weekend plans in my opinion.
Best Walks in Edinburgh
We live in a wonderful city with lots of beautiful green spaces, both for quick breaks or for a proper adventure:
The Meadows: A great option for a short, refreshing walk as a break from the library.
Portobello Beach: If you fancy a seaside stroll, this is the perfect place! Fish and chips or pizza from Civerinos are also bonuses!
The Pentlands: If you have some more free time, there are many paths and routes across these beautiful hills just outside the city (with bus links!). This makes it a perfect break from the city.
Making time for the outdoors doesn’t have to be a big effort – it’s about small, simple changes that help you get fresh air and enjoy Edinburgh’s beautiful green spaces. So, as we move into spring, challenge yourself to do a little more. Your body and mind will thank you for it!
