A recent study revealed that Edinburgh has the priciest clubs in the country and ranks third nationally for the cost of a student night out.
The University Night Out Price Index, published on 29 September by Sixes Cricket, a social cricket venue operator, ranked 56 UK university zones covering 110 institutions. It scored each on the cost of three pints, club entry, a two-mile taxi and late-night food.
Only London and Cheltenham scored higher than Edinburgh, making it the highest-ranked zone outside England.
Edinburgh’s median club entry is £12.50, £2.50 more than London’s £10. Sixes estimates a full night out in the city costs between £41.50 and £52.13, not including pre-drinks, which students say can add up to £10.
The entry figure is a median of paid tickets only. Many venues waive entry on weekdays, and some, like Subway Cowgate, don’t charge before 11pm on weekends.
One student said he was “very conscious” of cost on a night out, and saw a “big change in the prices of things, especially drinks” compared with his hometown of Hexham.
Another student, from Glasgow, noticed a “clear difference in prices, and in the demand for clubs” in Edinburgh compared with her home city..
Still, cheaper options do exist. At The Hive Nightclub and Venue, shots are £2 and doubles £5, with free entry on weekdays, which keeps it popular with students despite a 2.9 rating on Google reviews.
