Stockbridge named best place to live in Edinburgh

The Edinburgh neighbourhood of Stockbridge has been included in The Times’ annual list of the best places to live in Scotland.

The list mentioned “national museums, delightful delis, boutiques and three of the ten best private schools in the country” as some of the reasons that Stockbridge made the list.

Though several Edinburgh students agreed that Stockbridge was a desirable area, they stated they do not live there or know anyone who lives there, with one student saying it “seems like it’s mostly professionals or families.”

Natalie, a fourth-year student, said Stockbridge is “really good for a day out” but “not practical as a student” in terms of its access to the University of Edinburgh campuses.

When asked what area they thought was the best in Edinburgh, most students named Newington due to its proximity to campus and its range of shops and food options.

One second-year student said that the “buses that go literally everywhere” were part of Newington’s appeal, adding that it “just doesn’t get more convenient.”

However, students observed that Newington “can get chaotic”, with some preferring
Marchmont for its “much quieter” atmosphere and its reputation as a “classic Edinburgh student neighbourhood.”

One student expressed a “hot take that Leith is actually great and has a great community” despite it being “farther out than most people would want.”

Several students also mentioned Bruntsfield, Tollcross, and Haymarket as possible options, particularly as “the usual student areas are getting over-saturated” amid the housing crisis.
