North Bridge two-way traffic returned on March 28 2025, ahead of schedule.
The northbound section of Northbridge closed on Monday 17 February 2025 for six weeks.
This closure was to allow resurfacing on both lanes outside Waverly Gate and toward Princes Street.
Refurbishment included cast iron bridge facades, repainting, repairing the pathway, and underdrainage.
During this time, traffic was only allowed through the southbound section of the street. The bus routes were also changed and moved through the national museum side.
The wider restoration of the bridge began in 2018.
Stephen Jenkinson, transport and environment convener has said: “I’m pleased that we have been able to complete these works slightly ahead of schedule.”
He also added: “We’re now in the final phase of the project and, while I acknowledge that it’s taken longer than we first anticipated, we’re preserving this majestic and hugely complex structure for future generations, and we owe it to them to make sure the job is completed to a high standard.”
