Takeaways from New York Fashion Week

The fashion world was hanging off the edge of its front row seat at the prospect of this year’s Spring/Summer New York Fashion Week.

With 15 creative directors debuting collections for fashion houses from Gucci to Maison Margiela, to Versace, as well as it being the first fashion week with Chloe Malle as Head of Editorial Content at Vogue, this week was certain to be one you wouldn’t want to miss. While technically falling one day before the official start of NYFW, Rachel Scott was the first to debut a collection this season, after only being announced as Proenza Schouler’s new creative director on the 2nd of September – starting the week as it meant to go on.

The most influential shows of the week included Nicholas Aburn’s debut show for Area, where his fresh daywear designs brought a new element to the brand, and Veronica Leoni’s first show for Calvin Klein, which elevated the brand’s basic look, redefining their space in the fashion world. Furthermore, the polished yet effortless look of the Michael Kors show made it one you couldn’t miss – using fringing and light colours to evoke images of the coast in the city.

It also wouldn’t be fashion week without some spectacular celebrity sightings. If you were lucky enough to be in New York, you would have seen A-listers from the likes of Demi Lovato and Solange Knowles at the Luar show, Elle Fanning at Coach and Pamela Anderson at TOTEME. Additionally, at Calvin Klein was everyone’s favourite heart-throb Christopher Briney, dressed head to toe in Calvin Klein: a two-piece consisting of black suit trousers and a waistcoat, a long silver chain necklace and black loafer shoes (not to mention, the well-placed hem of the iconic CK boxers).

This year’s Spring/Summer NYFW does not come without its challenges, however, with it being the first since the introduction of President Trump’s global tariffs. As the taxes came into effect, the cost of importing materials rose, causing many designers to have to cut or alter looks from their shows to avoid additional costs – in particular, smaller designers who lack the support and funding to incur this new burden. As if the fashion industry wasn’t already competitive and elitist, the addition of these tariffs is pushing smaller designers further to the sidelines, while the giants barely feel the pinch. But this didn’t seem to stop the stars who attended these shows from partying – with Mark Ronson performing at multimedia performance space ARTSPACE to close the week.
