There’s no denying that the all-encompassing power of AI is taking over every facet of humanity. It is the marmite of technology: either you hate it, or you’re rendered incompetent without it. For those sane people who comprehend that AI is the most immense bane of our existence since the last Eduroam crash during exam season – there is a constant fear that anything we do may be mistaken for AI. Recently, the devil-tech has claimed a new victim – our glorious em dashes.
Em dashes, the pretentious commas, have suffered a fatal attack from the wrath of AI, with recent investigations finding that ChatGPT and other AI technologies use them to a disproportionate extent. This means that now any body of text that uses an em dash raises plausible suspicions of being AI-generated. A bad day for those who think that they’re above commas and parentheses.
Humans teach AI everything that it knows, and in turn, we now have to change how we express ourselves (e.g., through writing) in order to sound less like the AI that we taught? What happens when we teach AI to overuse semi-colons, exclamation points, or when we teach it how to finely perfect the tone of snarky British sarcasm? A near future could see us altering the entirety of our personalities, our thinking processes, in order to optimise our innate human-ness.
So, if (or when) the robot uprising happens, and I am chosen to send a message on behalf of the remaining humans – it will be a plea of desperation. “Give us back our em dashes!”
