When South Morningside Primary School girls won the Edinburgh Schools Football Cup last year, they were presented a small plastic trophy.
On the same day, the equivalent winning boys team was awarded a much larger and grander silver trophy, sparking outrage and disappointment from the girls of the team, spectators, and the public.
The South Morningside girls decided to take action against their mistreatment. They sent a letter to the Edinburgh Primary Schools Sports Association (EPSSA) President, Willie French, explaining how they felt.
French agreed that the girls’ trophy was not adequate and to rectify the situation, a new trophy worth £1,600 was awarded to the girls, along with their apology.
The Edinburgh University Women’s Football Club told The Student: “Instances such as these remain too common, simply instilling precedents that unfairly present men’s football as more important, [and disadvantages] women.”
They continued: “Disparities from training and equipment quality to general discourse surrounding women’s football stunts its progression as a legitimate women’s sport.”
