With the Fringe’s nightlife being a unique scene, Abandoman (AKA Rob Broderick), brings a little bit of that into his show. Shouting out to the audience under moving light beams, we are told that will soon be some hip-hop made on the spot.
The night is a fantastic experience — a mixture of live music, improv, comedy, and much more. Rob Broderick uses his unique, trustful aura to its full potential on stage. By inviting several audience members on stage and getting to know a bit about their life, the talented musician turns little day-to-day life fragments into impactful beats. He transforms the venue into a space to laugh, party, and rave.
It is an incredible achievement that Broderick carries the room from the moment he enters it. The way he handles the balance between improv and acoustic segments is fascinating. The use of personal and physical space is an art in shows like this, as one step too close to audience members could be seen as over-stepping. However, Broderick’s rich experience — alongside his soothing yet impactful interactions with the audience — makes this show endlessly enjoyable.
Furthermore, the use of various musical techniques lifts the show to a new realm. Throughout the performance, audience-led motifs — coupled with the support from the DJ of the night — chip in and contribute to creating this magnificent hour.
Overall, Abandoman: Afterglow is magic and surreal. A performance with the setting of a night club, the energy of a music festival, and led by a musician with a calming smile and a talent for lyrics, is a beautiful starter for a crazy night out.
