The Revival of The Hunger Games

Like many others, my obsession with the Hunger Games has recently been reignited as a result of the social media frenzy regarding the soon-to-be released prequel and the excellency of the films. The question is what makes this book-to-film adaptation so incredible that the interest has lasted years after it was released?

For one thing, the film series is remarkable is its attention to detail, with social media users creating new theories and finding new hidden clues and meanings within the films. One example is in Catching Fire, when the audience of the Capitol are outraged and demand the cancellation of the 75th Games upon hearing of Katniss’ ‘pregnancy’. The fact that they are more upset over the concept of harming an unborn baby than the actual children forced into the games every year is reminiscent of the current pro-life debate and the injustice of it. This one example of political allegory within the series signals its importance and the depth behind its creation. Furthermore, it speaks to real life situations of war, with President Coin symbolising the dangers of revenge and the harm that comes with it, as innocent civilians end up being punished rather than the actual perpetrators. In turn, the concept of the Hunger Games is unique in nature and its dystopian genre allows the reader/viewer to dissect political issues from a removed standpoint.

Additionally, Jennifer Lawrence portrays Katniss in such an emotive and real way, allowing viewers to truly connect and empathise with her character. Particularly in the scene following Prim’s death, the numb, mentally destroyed, and devastated portrayal of Katniss is incredibly well-done. The love triangle within the series signals the need for peace, light and forgiveness in a destructive, spiteful world, and the relationship between Katniss and Peeta in the films is exquisitely done. Katniss’ denial of her feelings towards him, their understanding of each other, Peeta’s selflessness and the on-screen chemistry between Lawrence and Hutcherson go some way in explaining the obsession and love that surrounds their relationship to this day.

The detailed Tiktok edits and new created theories have made me fall in love with the film series all over again and I believe the acting, hidden messages and political depth have allowed it to continue to be one of the most popular film series of our generation.
