We have all heard what a fresher must have and do; vitamin C for freshers flu, be registered with a GP and sign up for Societies. It’s the same stuff repeated on a loop so many times it could become the world’s most fatal drinking game. But what actually keeps you sane through the fever dream that is Freshers? Here’s how to keep those five senses in balance.
Sight
First impressions matter! Personal style is the first point of call. Opt for a classic jean (avoid the laundry later) and leather jacket combo to fit in with the masses, or turn up bare foot wearing a flat cap if you’re looking to stand out. Pick some easy outfits you can throw on before your 9am without too much thought.
Smell
Freshers is home to some of the worst smells you will encounter – if your sense of smell is strong steer clear of The Three Sisters and head to a Wine Society social where I’m sure your sommelier strengths will be much appreciated. In student accommodation where candles are banned and your room can harbour a deep and strange funk, a room spray never goes amiss – boys this does not mean lynx!
Taste
We arrive with an abundance of cupboard snacks but quickly find that a quick and easy soup is the snack meal of choice all around. With a five minute microwave heat up you’ll be transported to the warmth of your home kitchen. Sainsbury’s offers quite the selection from chicken and veg to lentil Dahl – keeping you well from the inside.
Touch
When missing home a soft blanket and comfy bed can make all the difference, try to beg, borrow or invest in a mattress topper – every hour of sleep counts!
Sound
Blocking out noise can be essential when on a different sleep schedule to others – whether you are trying to get your naps in the day or just aren’t a party fiend, silicone earplugs are cheap and a lifesaver.
But it’s the sixth sense you might need most. Working out who your friends are going to be, knowing when to call it a night and keeping your social battery up require intuition. So listen to your five senses, but most of all listen to that little voice inside that whispers ever-so-quietly when noise is all around!
