More defections from SNP to Alex Salmond’s Alba Party

Chris Cullen, Scottish National Party councilor for South Ayrshire, has defected to the Alba party.

Alba is a pro independence party led by former First Minister of Scotland, Alex Salmond.

The move comes in the wake of former SNP leadership contestant Ash Regan’s defection to Alba earlier this month.

In a comment to The Student Ash Regan stated the SNP had: “lost its focus on independence, the very foundation of its existence”.

She added: “I could not, in good conscience, continue to be part of a party that has drifted from its path and its commitment to achieving independence as a matter of urgency”.

As a new member of Alba, Regan became the first official voice at Holyrood and the first Alba member of the Scottish Parliament.

Humza Yousaf said that Regan defection was “no great loss.”

At the recent SNP conference, First Minister, Humza Yousaf laid out a new independence plan.

A motion passed that stated if in the next election the SNP win a majority of seats it will seek to begin independence negotiations with Westminster.
