As the Carabao Cup final raged on, Liverpool and Chelsea were in a stalemate until extra time when Virgil van Dijk scored the game’s first goal and the game-winning goal. This wasn’t the first time van Dijk had hit the back of the net during this match. In the 60th minute, Andy Robertson, Liverpool’s fullback, crossed the ball into the box for van Dijk to head home. However, following a VAR check, his teammate Wataru Endo was adjudged to be offside. Earlier in the match, Chelsea and England winger Raheem Sterling also thought he had scored the game’s first goal. However, in the build-up play the flag goes up offside after a lengthy review from the officials.
Recently, Jurgen Klopp, the Liverpool manager announced he won’t be returning to Anfield next year to coach again. Klopp has been at Liverpool since autumn of 2015 and has gone on to bring success back to Anfield as the Liverpool manager. However, this recent trophy was a little different than the ones he has won in the past. Klopp had 11 players excluded from this game, including the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Darwin Nunez, and Mo Salah. Instead, the contributions of Liverpool’s academy players stole the moment. Fearless from the start, Conor Bradley played first at right-back and later in midfield. Klopp would end up substituting Bobby Clark and James McConnell in the number eight positions and Jayden Danns at number nine, while in central defence, Jarell Quansah also entered the game.
Klopp, speaking to Sky Sports, said, “What happened here was absolutely insane, these things are not possible. The team, a squad, an academy full of character. I am so proud I could be part of that tonight.”
As for Chelsea, this was the first hint of success the club has seen since the arrival of American owner Todd Boehly. Chelsea, who have also been battling injuries this season, have not been able to produce good form in the Premier League, even after spending over 1 billion pounds in the transfer market since Boehly took over in May 2022. It has been a struggle for the Chelsea players to mesh and show improvement on the field, but making the Carabao final was a good first for the Boehly era.
Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino had this to say after the match to reporters, “They need to feel the pain, we played for a trophy we didn’t get. Now it’s the same, what can you tell me to feel better? Nothing.”
It is fitting how the match ended. As two teams enter new eras of their histories, Liverpool is soaking up all the success they are having and have had under Klopp, while Chelsea is eyeing the future and hoping that their team under Boehly and Pochettino can take the next step; following in Klopp and Liverpool’s footsteps.
