Big Cheese is definitively not dead. To claim Big Cheese is dead would seriously undermine the achievements of Edinburgh University students to make the most out of a dire clubbing scene, and still manage to let loose the pressures of university work and have a fun night out.
Big Cheese will never be dead, mostly because it is the only club in Edinburgh where fresher students under 18 years old are allowed to enter. But also, despite most students claiming they only ironically go to Big Cheese, it is hard to deny that it is a fun night out. Big Cheese will never fail to be popular because the cheesy playlist including pop hits from the 80s to 2000s means there’s always a song for someone to enjoy, and most people will know the words to sing along.
From Bon Jovi to Wham!, from Whitney Houston to Britney Spears it is obvious that Big Cheese allows for an extremely immersive musical experience due to its wide range of pop classics. Edinburgh students say they continue to enjoy Big Cheese because of the nostalgic feelings it incurs, reminding them of their favourite songs from when they were younger.
The infamous club will always attract a student crowd because it is cheap. With entry tickets only being £5 it is one of the cheapest tickets in Edinburgh. The drinks are also offered at an affordable price allowing students to enjoy a night out without worrying about a huge dent in their bank account the morning after. Big Cheese will always have customers due to students struggling to afford to go out clubbing as a result of the escalating Cost of Living Crisis.
Hangar 5’s location above Potterow’s student study space and favourite lunch spot makes some students apprehensive about being able to have fun in the same place where they do tutorial preparation work. However, its central location near many student accommodations and the city centre is ideal. Big Cheese still manages to be popular as it is handy for the numerous students who live in Newington and Marchmont to get home quickly. While the windy staircases are not practical for drunk students when you eventually get to the top there is a decent-sized dance floor and bar.
While the Big Cheese Instagram posts make it obvious that the crowd is not as numerous as other Edinburgh Clubs, it is not dead. Mostly because students will never take for granted the opportunity of a cheap and cheerful night out, but also because after the closure of Teviot, it is the last remnant of any sort of student union and a sense of a collective University identity. It is a central club location for Edinburgh Student societies, such as Edinburgh’s Squash Society.
Therefore, Big Cheese is the only source of nightlife that can properly connect the University of Edinburgh students and the student’s community will always keep it alive.
