Activists arrested after sprayed red paint on Scottish Parliament

On 11 March, This is Rigged campaigners sprayed red paint on the Scottish Parliament building. 

This is Rigged protest against rising food insecurity in Scotland and demand that the Scottish Government “fully fund a community food hub per every 500 households.” 

According to a Police Scotland spokesperson, three campaigners have been arrested. 

The banners displayed contained messages such as “hunger is a political choice” or “one in four Scots.”

In an Instagram post, the activist group explained: 

“In 2014, under the Good Food Nation Act, they [the Scottish Government] vowed to provide affordable, accessible and nutritious food to every citizen by 2025.”

They also explained that they would not stop until their demands are met.

The Scottish Government’s plan of action to solve the food insecurity in the country is itemised in the “Cash-First: Towards Ending the Need for Food Banks in Scotland” published in May 2023. 

The plan sets out nine actions to respond to household financial crisis in the next three years. 

Since the beginning of the year, the group has increased its activity. 

In February they organised a Sit-in at Holyrood House to demand supermarkets to slash the prices of baby products which increased by 24 per cent between 2021 and 2023. 

Last week, during a demonstration at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, the group spattered a bust of Queen Victoria with porridge and jam. 

A similar protest which took place in August 2023, to demand that the Scottish Government oppose Rishi Sunak’s backing of hundreds of new oil and gas licences in the North Sea.
