According to the Glasgow Times, a candidate who has often said statements that liken him to a Holocaust denier is reported to be running in the Hillhead council by-election in Glasgow.
The Hillhead by-election will be contested by seven candidates next month where the Liberal Democrats, Independent Green Voice, and an independent candidate are also standing.
Former UKIP member Alistair McConnachie, is running under the Independent Green Voice, and in documents seen by The Guardian made the claim that:
“I don’t accept that gas chambers were used to execute Jews for the simple fact there is no direct physical evidence to show that such gas chambers ever existed.”
McConnachie’s views have led him to be kicked out of UKIP as a result of his far-right views.
The Independent Green Party has been described by a spokesperson for the party as a party where:
“The far-right Independent Green Voice appear to be aiming to solidify their status as neo-fascist spoiler candidates, hoping to disrupt the outcome of this election.”
McConnachie is receiving backlash for attempting to run for this seat.
Glasgow Labour City Council Leader, George Resmond has said that “there is no place in politics for hatred and intolerance.
“Scottish Labour will stand firmly against the divisive and damaging politics of McConnachie and run a positive campaign to elect a local champion for Hillhead.”
