Willy Wonka’s “pure imaginative” experience in Glasgow

On 24 February 2024, a Willy Wonka’s experience in Glasgow was shut down after families complained about the inaccuracy of the event.

House of Illuminati, the organiser, promised on a colourful website an immersive experience through a one hour experience in the Wonka’s universe for £35 per person.

Instead of “enchanting surprises”, families found “randomly placed oversized props” in a warehouse with the promise of two jelly beans per child according to the parents’ complaints on Facebook.

A villain called “The Unknown”, who was a teenage girl with a mask hidden behind a mirror, was added to Roald Dahl’s original story, which scared a lot of children.

Paul Connell, who played Willy Wonka, said in several interviews that he was shocked and had to improvise all of his script to try his best to give happiness to the children.

Over 850 people, according to the Independent, paid for the event, some families made a long trip to come, and videos of crying children are all over the internet.

Complaints over the use of AI to generate fake images for the website to look more attractive have been raised on the Internet.

Police Scotland told The Student that it wasn’t a police matter, “officers were called after an event was cancelled and advice was given”.

The company apologised and promised full refunds for the customers.

The director, Billy Coull, who has been associated with several controversies, also apologised for the experience that did not come out as he expected, he explained on the Independent
