Big Cheese, an Edinburgh student nightlife staple, hosted an “Early to Bed” event on the 4th of October. This concept has the potential to revolutionise clubbing. Instead of a regular 10pm to 3am run, you can head over straight from your Friday afternoon lecture, stay until the last song at 10pm, pop into the chippy, make it to bed for just after 11 and wake-up ready to make the most of your Saturday.
There has been a decline in going-out rates amongst young people. This is down to several reasons, affordability being one of the main culprits. It’s inevitable that the later you stay out the more you spend (I’m looking at you, Cab Vol with your £12 entry fee). In addition to that, there’s been a rise in the sober-curious movement, with more people choosing to miss the Sunday-scaries and instead go for a booze-free evening. That being said, whilst this is an earlier event, Big Cheese will still have the same cheap drink deals, meaning this isn’t strictly an event for sober crowds.
However, I assume fewer drinks will be consumed earlier in the evening, before the hours of bad decisions.
As it’s still early in the semester, I’ve been trying to make the most of going out before deadlines pile up. It has often left me to reflect on how much my weekends feel wasted beyond the hijinks that happen in the wee hours, as my Saturdays and Sunday have been spent rotting and regretting.
There are 365 party girls (bumpin’ that) that I’m sure wouldn’t be caught dead in a club at 6pm. To this I reflect on the best and worst parts of a night out. Best: dancing, good deals on entry and drinks, a fun group of people and getting food on the way home. Worst? Dynamic pricing of Uber’s from Cowgate at 2am, the horror of looking through your drunk purchases and the feeling you’ve wasted the following day because all you can bring yourself to do is rock back-and-forth in a dark room and relive the embarrassing things you did.
Big Cheese’s ticket page highlights Early to Bed as having all the best bits; cheesy tunes, cheap drinks and dancing “without the 3am scaries”. It’s a little embarrassing to be at Big Cheese regardless of the hour, why not battle that social stigma by having a good time and be able to fully enjoy the rest of your weekend?
