Throughout the world, there are iconic streets, some known for looking pretty, some for their food scenes, others for culture or history. They are often common tourist spots, and so today The Student wanted to highlight some of our favourites.

The Shambles, York
Firstly, the Shambles in York is a perfect example of an aesthetic historical and cultural street. Narrow, with the buildings dating from the 14th century teetering over the pavement, it is a haven for tourists and locals alike. It is decorated for special occasions (Christmas wreaths and fairy lights are practically a permanent feature) and was supposedly JK Rowling’s inspiration for Diagon Alley. Another place with similar vibes to the Shambles is Christmas Steps in Bristol; the fairy lights create an enchanting walk around the city’s Art Quarter.
Brick Lane, London
It was hard to narrow it down to just one street in London, but, ultimately, Brick Lane is so famous for its culture and food, making it one of the most well-known streets in the city. From thrift stores to bookshops and ever-changing street art, it allows visitors an insight into the city that they might not otherwise have. Why not try visiting the underground vintage stalls or artisan market? The street also gives its name to Monica Ali’s novel, Brick Lane which was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize on its release.

Victoria Street, Edinburgh
Would it really be a famous streets list if I didn’t at least mention Edinburgh’s Victoria Street? Gorgeous, and with lots of delicious cafes and restaurants to try, it’s no wonder it’s become a necessity to visit during an Edinburgh trip. However, if you want to explore somewhere new in the city, I’d also recommend Kerr Street in Stockbridge for pretty restaurants and coffee shops, and of course the famous Stockbridge market on Sunday mornings.
Rue de Belleville, Paris
Of course, there are innumerable streets abroad that really do deserve praise. Rue de Belleville in Paris is similar to Brick Lane, given it’s known for street art and has many markets. It’s also a world away from the blasé chic side of Paris.
Oranienstrße, Berlin
This street has been named one of the coolest streets in the world for its bars, restaurants and shops that would help create the perfect night out.
Fifth Avenue, New York USA
Whilst busy and maybe over-touristy, it is iconic for a reason. With Central Park and MoMA gracing the street and running through Manhattan, Harlem, and Greenwich Village, it should be an essential to-do on anyone’s New York bucket list.
Personally, I would recommend putting Brick Lane at the top of any to-visit list, if you haven’t already been, however any of these streets would be amazing places to visit.
Are there any other famous streets you think we’ve missed?
