Edinburgh engineers develop new type of generator for offshore energy

Edinburgh engineers have created a new kind of generator which could reduce the cost of electricity produced by offshore renewable technology.

The “lightweight, stackable generator system” can convert mechanical energy produced by offshore wind, wave and tidal technologies into electricity.

The system can reduce the average production cost of renewable energies by 10 to 15%. It can also extend the lifespans of renewable energy installations by 30 to 40%.

Professor Markus Mueller of Edinburgh University’s School of Engineering invented the technology, which was developed further with Dr Joseph Burchell.

The UK Government has promised to double onshore wind and quadruple offshore wind installations by 2030.

Dr Joseph Burchell commented: “We believe our technology directly addresses critical gaps in the UK’s offshore renewable energy supply chain.”
