Calamitous Cabinet?: Donald Trump reveals contenious selections for his cabinet

As President-elect Donald Trump prepares for his second term, he has shocked even the most staunch Republicans with his recent cabinet picks. However, these are ultimately a reflection of his ‘America First’ approach for his second administration.

Secretary of State: Marco Rubio

For Secretary of State, Trump has appointed Senator Marco Rubio, a foreign policy hawk with a hardline stance on China, Iran, and Russia. Rubio’s approach to foreign relations, particularly in urging Europe to take more responsibility for its own defense and his tough position on the Middle East and Ukraine, aligns with Trump’s vision for a more restrained US foreign policy. If appointed, Rubio would make history as the first Latino Secretary of State, adding diversity to Trump’s administration and strengthening his appeal among Latino voters.

Defense Secretary: Pete Hegseth

The role of Defense Secretary has been delegated to former Fox News host, Pete Hegseth. The former television personality has done stints in both Afghanistan and Iraq and will now be undertaking the role as minister of, indisputably, the most powerful military in the world. Hegseth’s unflinching pro-Israel role will be crucial in the coming months in relation to his potential undertakings in Gaza.

Attorney General: Matt Gaetz

Matt Gaetz has been tapped as being the next Attorney General, surprising even hardline conservatives. Republicans have called Gaetz ‘reckless’ and ‘unserious,’ amongst other terms that symbolize his moral-defunctness. Amongst his many controversies, Gaetz was investigated by the Justice Department for sex-trafficking, has faced various illicit-drug use charges and has been accused by a plethora of women for sexual misconduct.

Chief of Staff: Susie Wiles

Trump has selected Susie Wiles as his Chief of Staff, making history with the first woman to hold the role. Known for her disciplined and strategic management, Wiles played a pivotal role in Trump’s successful 2024 campaign. Her appointment signals a more organized and focused administration, as she will oversee White House operations, guide policy development, and help maintain stability, correcting the dysfunction that marked his first term.

UN Ambassador: Elise Stefanik

Trump has selected Elise Stefanik as his UN Ambassador, signaling a more combative US posture toward the United Nations. A staunch defender of Israel and a vocal critic of the UN, Stefanik has advocated for reassessing US funding to the organization, especially in light of its criticism of Israel. Her appointment highlights Trump’s commitment to challenging international institutions that he believes undermine US interests.

Trump has also announced that two former Democrats will join positions. Vaccine skeptic Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will be Health Secretary and former Democratic Representative from Hawaii Tulsi Gabbard will serve as Director of National Intelligence.

Trump also said that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will co-managed a newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which aims to maximize efficiency from minimizing federal bureaucracy.

All cabinet appointees must be confirmed by the Senate, but Trump has suggested that the Senate takes a recess so he can get several controversial figures into the cabinet who may not otherwise be confirmed by the Senate.
