Fashion circulates around a cyclic force of ‘trending’ and things that quickly become ‘so last year’, yet one entity that never goes out of style are prints.
While this owes to the copious abundance of prints that exist, it goes without saying that something patterned is always ‘in’. Think cow print, perhaps gingham; these aren’t my favourites, and neither are they deemed the most classic, so treat this as your guide to the most timeless prints which never age – no matter the craze!
It would be shameful not to mention animal print amid the current leopard revival. The versatility of the fabric comes in practically every form imaginable – from faux fur to satin, from kitten heels to a trench; it’s everywhere, and there is a good reason for this.
Cheetah’s roots are in luxury fashion, developed into party girl, and have now become chic, a print which dominates with a go big or go home attitude.
On a more tame note, polka dots always make for a classic, centre stage piece. In any colour combination, polka dot-size, or item of clothing, there’s a charm to them.
A sister to this, we’ve got stripes. Some associate nautical, others Parisian, but the white and navy striped colourway is consistently reliable. They can be kept classy and quiet with thinner lines, or made bold and daring by experimenting with angles and thicknesses. A personal favourite is the development of pinstripe: Ralph Lauren do it best.
It would be wrong not to give plaid it’s time to shine; after all, we are in Scotland. Don’t be misconstrued, there are notable differences between plaid, tartan, and gingham, yet they serve as umbrella terms which have come to represent both countries and brands.
Traditional tartan kilts reflect Scotland’s heritage, plaid inner linings are the epitome of Burberry, while tartan scarfs affiliate with Barbour. These prints can be made chic in the form of miniskirts, frat-boy styled in flannel, and cosy as pyjama bottoms; what can’t plaid do?
Although flowers are scarce in November, floral prints are certainty blooming in trends. Associated with embodying femininity and natural beauty, florals are arguably the most varying print out there; readily available in muted, detailed designs as well as large scale, vibrant patterns. This flexibility is what makes floriated looks both timeless, and personal.
