MLS Play-offs Get Underway

The start of the 2024 MLS Play-offs was packed with unforgettable moments. Top-seeded teams like Inter Miami, reigning champions Columbus Crew, and dominant FC Cincinnati all suffered surprising defeats in the first round. The MLS play-off format, which seems to change every season, has its pros and cons. For the second consecutive year, the league has adopted a best-of-three series, where the higher-seeded team hosts two home games, while the lower-seeded team only hosts one. This format has sparked widespread criticism from players and fans alike.

Inter Miami fullback, and former Barcelona star, Jordi Alba shared his thoughts on the format, saying, “We were the most consistent team, we broke the points record, we had a good season, but what we wanted was to win these play-offs. I think this format is somewhat unfair.”

For international players in the MLS, this format can seem unusual or even flawed, especially when compared to European leagues, where the team with the most points at the end of the season is crowned champion. However, as is common in American sports, parity, and opportunities for underdog success are prioritized in leagues like the MLS. While the play-off system allows for exciting stories – like Atlanta United upsetting Messi’s Miami – it also has issues that need addressing, as Alba noted.

LA Galaxy star Riqui Puig and his team, fresh off a Round One victory over the Colorado Rapids, were also frustrated—particularly with the scheduling. Puig posted on X, “Insane… 22 days for the next play-off game… Come on MLS.” His frustration reflects the conflict between the MLS play-off schedule and the international break, which results in a long gap between matches. For the defending champions Columbus Crew, who looked like the best team in North America throughout the regular season, a play-off collapse now leaves them with tough decisions. Their next steps will likely focus on the future of 2024 MLS MVP finalist Cucho Hernandez. With interest from European and Mexican clubs growing, if they decide to sell him, they’ll need to find a replacement capable of matching his impressive 30-goal contribution this season.
