Much to my delight, I recently had the pleasure of getting to sample some products from the Twelve Triangles bakery in Edinburgh. The products that I was lucky enough to try were the croissant biscottis and a jar of whey caramel, two things that spoke to my (rather ravenous) sweet tooth.
The first item up for trial was the golden-brown biscotti, and, my oh my, it did not disappoint! Composed seemingly of sweetened and fried slices of croissant, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Croissants and I have always had a rocky relationship – they promise so much, and yet I feel they rarely deliver. Fortunately, that was not the case on this occasion. Instead, the flavour of the croissants (quite a light, airy sweetness) had deepened, allowing for a richer taste. This, along with the substantial crunch, meant I was ultimately left more satisfied than I can ever remember being from croissants!
The whey caramel therefore had much to live up to. It was similarly sweet- a distinct positive in my eyes. Of course, being a jar of caramel, a partner was required. Whilst I found that a dollop of caramel spread across the biscotti ultimately proved to be too much in its dulcetness, the deeper notes that it brought worked especially well on items not already sweetened. As a spread on toast, it was a pleasant alternative to other sugary spreads, such as jam or marmalade. I am reliably informed by a friend that it was also a very welcome addition to her coffee. I’m now looking for a baking recipe to use it in, and with the nights drawing in, I think a sticky toffee-inspired creation could be on the cards. In addition, the use of whey in producing the caramel means that, for all the gym-goers, it provides a level of protein that other alternatives might not.
All in all, I was very happy to sample the products; for someone who doesn’t have many lifestyle pieces under their belt, it was a delightful novelty, compounded by just how delicious they both were. This process, however, came with a delectable twist. I was able to utilise a service I hadn’t previously discovered, now operating in Edinburgh: Delli.
Delli is a company set up by the team behind Depop, the worldwide clothing marketplace, and aims to add something a little bit different to the world of food e-commerce by allowing independent producers to sell their wares to a much wider audience. It supports local businesses, whilst helping them to expand their reach much further than would have previously been possible. I would heartily recommend them to any and all – they have options and offers to fit most budgets and are well worth taking a look at if you haven’t yet found a Christmas present for the foodies in your life!
