After 25 years of independent operations, Big Cheese is now collaborating with local club promoters from Club Cartel and will begin hosting the event BROKE! Fridays to make, in EUSA’s words, the club “bigger and cheesier.”
Club Cartel is Scotland’s most prominent club syndicate, running events at various venues across Edinburgh with their BROKE! Fridays, typically hosted at the Liquid Rooms, one of their most significant events.
These changes come during a low time for the Big Cheese at Potterrow. A recent survey by The Edinburgh Tab showed that 96 per cent of students surveyed believe “the night lost its charm.”
Many students interviewed by The Student also found the club unappealing when they first went or did not go at all due to the reputation.
Laurie, a second-year, said, “It always looked like a bad time out, so I’ve never been.” Laurie believes the reputation is so bad that no initiative will save it.
Another second-year had hope: “It’s a shame because, for many freshers, it can be a comfortable first clubbing experience.” They also thought that there might be a demand for the traditional Big Cheese experience, especially among freshers.
That being said, the BROKE! Fridays event at the Liquid Rooms coming to Potterrow could signal the possibility of a revival for the Big Cheese.
Whether the Big Cheese succeeds in its search for relevance remains to be seen.
